Last year, Alisa’s brother passed away. Before the loss, she recalls how excited her brother was to hear she was going back to school. After all, he motivated Alisa to finally get her bachelor’s degree.
“My piece of advice,” she says, “is to just jump in and do it. It’s never too late. Don’t procrastinate, don’t let doubt creep in. The sooner you do it, the sooner you finish it.”
An Online Degree: The Perfect Fit
In and out of community college throughout her life, Alisa found the perfect program and educational fit for her: Strayer’s online degree program.
“I had no idea I could do everything online,” she says. “Once I found out I could, I called Strayer representative Aleah Valentine, who made it all sound so easy. The next thing I know, I’m signing up for classes that start in two weeks.”
An employee of Sodexo for the past 7 years, Alisa tapped into Sodexo’s corporate partnership with Strayer to get a discount and reimbursement of $2,500 per year on her tuition. She’s currently enrolled in a business administration program, with a concentration in management.
“I’m enjoying the business classes and am motivated to go on to get my master’s degree,” she says.
Even though a Strayer campus is just a few miles from home, she enjoys getting an online degree. She gets to learn on her own time. Sometimes, she wakes up at 3:00 a.m. to study for her classes.
“I’m taking a course this quarter in HR management, and I like it a lot,” she says. “Also, my finance class really surprised me. I was dreading it because I don’t like math, but learning about the financial crisis has been so interesting!”
Juggling Work and Education
Alisa’s time at Strayer has proved it’s possible to juggle a job and an education. Especially with all the options for support Strayer provides, both on campus and online.
“It’s not that hard,” she says. “The resources, any help you need – it’s all right there. Stephanie Ball, my personal Strayer success coach, is so helpful at keeping me on my path.”
Alisa knows she’s got this online degree. She knows she’ll succeed. And she knows exactly what she’ll do when she graduates: take a much-deserved cruise to the Virgin Islands.
